Station 10 and Station 9 responded to the area of Red Bank Lane in Melfa for a report of a watercraft in distress. Upon arrival, crews discovered a sailboat had come into contact with overhead power lines, causing the boat’s mast to catch fire. Chief 9 ( M. Rydberg) established Red Bank Ln command.

The Virginia Marine Police, United States Coast Guard, ANEC, and Accomack County Sheriff’s Office were notified. The boat was located approximately 50 yards from the shoreline and had one person on board.

ANEC arrived on scene and secured the power. Two EMS personnel then boarded a VMRC boat and proceeded out to the sailboat. The sole occupant was able to board the VMRC boat and was transported to Medic 100 for evaluation at a hospital.

All departments collaborated effectively, and with the combined efforts of each agency, the situation was brought under control without further incident. Command was terminated and the scene was turned over to ANEC
