Working Commercial Fire in Onancock

By Deputy Chief Randy Green
January 31, 2026

Engine 105, staffed with three personnel, responded to the location of a reported commercial structure fire in conjunction with Station 9 (Onancock). Upon arrival, command established on scene advised Engine 105’s crew to assist interior operations by conducting a systematic search for the source of smoke that was reported within the structure.

Crews made entry into the building and performed a thorough investigation of multiple areas. During this investigation, an active fire was located in the basement of the structure. The fire was confined primarily to a single room; however, there was significant fire damage within that area, along with smoke conditions extending into other portions of the building.

Fire suppression efforts were immediately initiated, and crews worked efficiently to bring the fire under control and achieve extinguishment. Once the fire was knocked down, personnel transitioned into salvage and overhaul operations. These efforts included checking for fire extension, opening up affected areas as needed, and ensuring all remaining hot spots were fully extinguished to prevent rekindle.

Throughout the incident, crews operated in a coordinated and disciplined manner, maintaining scene safety while working to minimize further property damage. The incident was successfully mitigated through the combined efforts of all responding units.

The department would like to extend its appreciation to all personnel and assisting agencies on scene for their professionalism, teamwork, and dedication in bringing this incident to a safe and successful conclusion.
