By Deputy Chief Randy Green
February 3, 2026

On December 30th, EMT-A Thurman and Firefighter Boyko responded to a medical call at a private residence for an ambulance request. Upon arrival at approximately 12:50 PM, the crew assessed a 62-year-old female patient presenting with sudden onset of slurred speech and facial drooping—clear indicators of a possible stroke.
Understanding the time-sensitive nature of stroke emergencies, EMT-A Thurman and FF Boyko made the immediate decision to initiate a rapid “load and go.” The patient was promptly secured and transported while ALS interventions were performed en route. Acting as Attendant in Charge, EMT-A Thurman contacted Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital to provide early notification of an incoming CODE Stroke (Brain Attack).
The ambulance arrived at the emergency department at approximately 1:10 PM. From the time the crew arrived on scene to the moment hospital staff were able to stop the stroke, only 22 minutes had elapsed—an outstanding example of rapid assessment, decisive action, and seamless coordination.
This incident underscores the critical importance of early recognition, swift transport, and effective communication during stroke responses. EMT-A Thurman and Firefighter Boyko are to be commended for their professionalism, clinical judgment, and commitment to patient care. In recognition of their exceptional actions, both members were awarded the Brain Saver Award by Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital. Congratulation on a job well done
