| Brush 10 Responds to Reported Highway Brush Fire
On 2/12/26, Brush 10 (B10) was dispatched to the reported location for a brush fire along the side of a highway within the Melfa Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company, Inc. response area. Units responded promptly to investigate and mitigate any potential threat to public safety and nearby property.
Assistant Chief 10, R. Nottingham, arrived on scene and immediately established Command. Upon completing a scene size-up, it was determined that the fire was located along the roadside shoulder and had already burned through a limited area of vegetation prior to the arrival of fire personnel. Fortunately, the fire had self-extinguished before crews arrived, likely due to limited available fuel and environmental conditions.
Although there was no active fire upon arrival, Brush 10 personnel conducted a thorough assessment of the affected area to ensure there were no remaining hot spots or smoldering material that could potentially reignite. Crews utilized onboard water to fully soak down the burn area and surrounding vegetation as a precautionary measure. This proactive step ensured the fire was completely extinguished and eliminated any risk of extension or rekindle, particularly given the proximity to the highway and passing traffic.
After confirming the scene was safe and there was no further hazard, Command terminated the incident and Brush 10 returned to service, remaining available for additional emergency responses.
The Melfa Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company reminds the public that even small roadside fires can quickly spread under the right conditions, especially during dry or windy weather. We encourage citizens to report any signs of fire or smoke immediately so responding crews can ensure the safety of the community. |
