By Deputy Chief Randy Green
March 2, 2026

On 03/02/2026, Engine 105 (E105) was dispatched for a reported hazardous materials incident at a private residence within our response area. Upon arrival, DPS3 was already on scene and had established command. Medic 90 and DPS3 were initially dispatched to the residence for an EMS call. Given the nature of the complaint, DPS 3requested assistance from the Eastern Shore Hazardous Materials Team to conduct a comprehensive atmospheric evaluation of the structure.
HazMat technicians and the E105 crew made entry into the residence wearing full structural firefighting personal protective equipment (PPE) and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) as a precautionary measure.

The following monitoring and detection procedures were conducted:

Four-Gas Meter Monitoring: Initial atmospheric testing was performed using a calibrated four-gas meter to evaluate oxygen levels, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, and combustible gases. No abnormal readings were detected.

Chemical Detection Testing: Crews then deployed pH paper and Dräger tubes specifically targeting potential polycarbonate and chlorine vapors. The Dräger tubes showed no measurable presence of hazardous gases.

Threat ID Vapor Monitoring: As an added precaution, crews utilized a Threat ID monitor to evaluate for additional airborne vapors. No hazardous readings were detected.

Findings and Determination
After a thorough evaluation of the residence using multiple detection methods and monitoring equipment, it was determined that there were no hazardous atmospheric conditions present.

There was no evidence of any foreign chemical agent or unknown sprayed substance within the residence.
The scene was deemed safe, and normal residential occupancy was authorized to resume. Command was formally terminated, and all responding units cleared the scene and returned to service.

Safety Reminder
Bleach and other household cleaning products can produce strong vapors, especially in enclosed or poorly ventilated areas. Residents are encouraged to Ensure adequate ventilation when using cleaning agents, Avoid mixing chemicals, particularly bleach with ammonia or acidic cleaners, Seek medical attention if irritation persists.

We are committed to ensuring the safety of our community through thorough investigation and professional response to all hazardous materials concerns.
