| Joint Confined Space Rescue Training Strengthens Regional Capabilities The Melfa Volunteer Fire & Rescue Co., Inc. recently participated in a two-day confined space rescue training exercise, joining forces with personnel from Chincoteague, Greenbackville, Onancock, and Wallops Fire Departments. This intensive training focused on specialized rescue techniques designed to safely remove patients from grain bins and other confined environments.
Throughout the course, participants practiced rigging aerial ladders for hoisting, craning, and artificial high directional systems—skills that are both highly technical and perishable, requiring regular practice to ensure proficiency and safety. These complex rescue operations are vital to maintaining readiness for agricultural and industrial emergencies across our region.
This training was made possible through the leadership of Fire Chief Barry Outten of the Greenbackville Volunteer Fire Department, Inc., Fire Chief Mike Rydberg of the Onancock Volunteer Fire Department Inc. and the generous support of the Accomack County Farm Bureau, whose financial and logistical contributions provided essential equipment and training facilities. We extend our deepest gratitude for their ongoing commitment to the safety and preparedness of our first responders.
We also wish to recognize the Accomack County Department of Public Safety and the Eastern Shore Fire Training Center (Training Committee) for funding this course, as well as Rescue Techs for their expert instruction. A special thanks goes to the Atlantic Fire Department for providing their facility for the classroom portion of the training.
This collaborative effort underscores the importance of regional cooperation and continuous professional development. It also marks a significant step forward in improving our operational readiness and ensuring the safety of the citizens we serve.
Further training initiatives and operational advancements are forthcoming, all aimed at enhancing emergency response capabilities and reinforcing our shared mission of protecting life and property throughout Accomack County and beyond. Melfa Volunteer Fire & Rescue Co., Inc. remains deeply grateful for the partnerships and community support that make training opportunities like this possible. Together, we continue to build a stronger, safer Eastern Shore. |
