On March 16, 2026 at 08:51 hours, the Melfa Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company was alerted for a reported vehicle fire in the 20500 block of Belote Farm Lane. Initial information from Accomack County Emergency Communications advised units were responding for a single vehicle with fire in the engine compartment. Tanker 108 (T108) responded and arrived on scene shortly thereafter. Upon arrival, crews found a single passenger vehicle with nothing showing. Fire personnel conducted a quick investigation and determined that there had been a small fire in the engine compartment, which had been extinguished prior to the arrival of the fire company. The area of origin appeared to be near the vehicle’s battery compartment. Command 10-22 was established upon arrival to manage the incident and ensure scene safety. Fire personnel verified that the fire was completely extinguished and that there were no remaining hazards or extension of fire within the engine compartment. After confirming the scene was safe, the incident was turned over to the vehicle owner. Command was terminated and T108 cleared the scene and returned to service. We remind the public that vehicle fires can spread rapidly.
