| On March 22, 2026, the Melfa Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident with unknown injuries along Lankford Highway. Engine 105 and Brush 10 made the initial response.
While units were en route, dispatch upgraded the incident to a motor vehicle accident with reported entrapment. Upon arrival, crews found a single vehicle that had left the roadway and struck a tree, sustaining heavy front-end damage.
Lieutenant 10 (M. Colona) established Lankford Highway Command and conducted an initial size-up. The EMS crew advised Command that was no entrapment, allowing crews to shift focus to scene safety and patient care.
Fire personnel immediately established traffic control to protect responders and the scene, while EMS crews began assessment and treatment of the vehicle’s sole occupant. Due to the critical nature of the patient’s condition, air medical transport was requested. Medic 100 transported the patient to a designated landing zone, where care was transferred to the flight crew for rapid transport to a higher level of care.
Fire units remained on scene assisting Virginia State Police with traffic control and scene safety until the vehicle was removed and the roadway was cleared. Command was terminated, and all units returned to service.
